With good nutrition you can recover better!
Disease costs your body a lot of energy. Your immune system is working overtime to fight bacteria and viruses. Healing infections takes a lot of energy and extra nutrients. Your muscle mass can decrease drastically during being sick, which can cause you to become very weak and even 'malnourished'.
Malnourished?
Maybe you've been able to eat less for a while, have less appetite. Because you have received fewer nutrients, at a time when you needed more, your body has little left for recovery. Did you know that there is already malnutrition if you unintentionally lose 5% (or more) of your weight within 1 month (for example, you weigh 60 kilos and lose 3 kilos in 1 month due to illness, then you already speak of malnutrition). And did you know that malnutrition makes strengthening take longer. Good nutrition is therefore very important after illness to be able to strengthen, to quickly regain its old self.
What does it take?
To restore and rebuild your resistance and muscle mass, you need good and sufficient protein. For recovery you even need a lot more protein than usual, these are the building blocks of your body. Can you get it in?
In addition, vitamins and minerals play an important role in tissue building and recovery, such as zinc. But also the vitamins A, D, E, B6, B12, and the mineral selenium are in the spotlight for recovery.
